Obama Bows on Settling Detainees

12Jun2009 Washington Post

The Washington Post reports that fierce opposition from Congress has forced President Obama to abandon plans to allow Guantanamo Bay prisoners, found innocent of any crimes, to settle in the United States. A number of Chinese Musims were arrested in Afghanistan or Pakistan and taken to Guantanamo Bay but were later exonerated. There is such hostility in the US Congress towards any former Guantanamo detainees, even, it seems, innocent ones, that they are not to be allowed to settle in the country that has wrongly deprived them of seven year's liberty. Meanwhile the US Administration is reported to be close to a deal with Saudi Arabia which would mean 100 Yemeni prisoners held at Guantanamo Bay will be sent to the Kingdom.
