12Feb2008 Sharia Laws, Theories Vary Among World's Muslims (NYT)

According to those who study Shariah law across the Muslim world, there are so many different interpretations that it is difficult to talk about Shariah as one fixed body of law. Only two or three countries (of which Saudi Arabia is one) amongst the 57 Muslim countries impose the strict punishments as prescribed in the Shariah and there are widely differing interpeations of the Shariah amonggst the various Islamic schools of thought.
