01Feb2008 U.N. Body Calls For Saudis to End Male Guardianship (NYT)

New York Times

The U.N. Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women has called upon Saudi Arabia to abide by the international women's rights treaty that the Kingdom signed in 2000 and abandon "male guardianship" practices which it asserts severely restrict the freedom and opportunties for women. The U.N. Committee argues that the international women's rights treaty should take precedence over Shariah law.
