16Nov2005 SR130 Million Allocated For Literary Clubs

Makkah, 16 November, 2005

The Ministry of Culture and Information has allocated SR130 million for implementing literary clubs’ projects, said the Minister of Culture and Information, Iyad Madani in a press statement.

He noted that the Ministry will unwaveringly extend support to the literary clubs, so as to enable them to perform their mission in a satisfactory manner.

Madani, who was speaking here on Tuesday evening after inaugurating the 18th conference of literary clubs, urged the boards of directors of the literary clubs to make the required arrangements for the implementation of projects.

Meanwhile, Madani said that the Prize of the State for Literature will be revived in line with a new vision and system.

He pointed out that the executive statute of the Prize has been submitted to the higher authorities.

The Minister underlined the importance of reforming the board of directors of the literary clubs.

Madani hoped that the literary clubs would provide a good opportunity for female Saudi intellectuals to express their views, but he denied that there was a trend to establish special female literary clubs.

Madani confirmed the support of the Ministry of Culture and Information to all innovators, including literary men and formative artists.

Madani urged the press to tackle topics in an objective manner and to project the activities of all literary clubs, and added: “But this does not mean that the Ministry is planning to stop press criticism against certain literary clubs”.
