15Nov2005 Water And Power Project Contracts Signed

Riyadh, 15 November, 2005

Contracts for building the third phase of Alshoaibah plant for water desalination and power generation were signed here today. The project is estimated to cost SR9 billion.

The contracts for the project were signed by the Water and Electricity Company and an alliance of Saudi-Malaysian companies.

The signing was attended by the Minister of Water and Electricity, Engineer Abdullah bin Abdulrahman Alhosain and his Malaysian counterpart, Dr. Lim Keng Yaik.

In a speech on the occasion, Minister Abdullah said today's signing of the agreements signifies a historical phase in opening investment opportunities in the fields of water and power to the private sector.

The project is located in the region of Alshoaibah, about 110 kilometers south of Jeddah. The output capacity of the project will be 880,000 cubic meters of water per day and 900 megawatts of electricity.

The project will supply water to the cities of Makkah, Jeddah, Taif and Baha.
