12Nov2005 Saudi Arabia Does Not Have Bird Flu

Jeddah, 12 November, 2005

The Minister of Health, Dr. Hamad bin Abdullah Al-Manie stressed that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is completely free of Bird Flu and there has not been any cases of affected birds reported.

In a statement to the Saudi Press Agency, Dr. Al-Manie pointed out that the Ministry of Health has been closely monitoring and following up the world pandemic developments of the disease through the World Health Organization and world scientific centers, noting that the Ministry has also taken all measures and required precautions to monitor the disease in humans.

Dr. Al-Manie indicated that Bird Flu virus mainly affects birds and poultry and is rarely transmitted to humans either through direct or indirect contact.

The Minister called on citizens not to take any notice of mobile phone messages or rumors which are absolutely not scientific, adding that citizens should depend on concerned authorities for information.
