Jeddah, 26 October, 2005

The Jeddah-based Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) has underscored the importance of preservation of peace and security in the Middle East.

In a statement released here today, it said: "As both Lebanon and Syria are members of the OIC, the Organization is following up with great concern the reactions to the publication of the report pertaining to the assassination of the former Lebanese Premier, Rafiq Hariri."

"The OIC absolutely supports the legitimate expectations of the Lebanese people and government to bring to justice all persons involved in the heinous assassination crime", said the statement.

The OIC appealed to all concerned parties to take caution and avoid any rash actions and said the issue is very sensitive and its repercussions will have an impact on the developments in the Middle East.

It pointed out that taking rash decisions will further aggravate the situation in the region.

The statement noted that the OIC believes that the Muslim world does not approve of the imposition of sanctions on any country because such a measure will lead to the sufferings of its people.

The OIC welcomed the statements of the Syrian authorities which reiterated Syria's readiness to cooperate with an independent international investigation team, and to facilitate its mission by letting it obtain all the required information.
