19Sep2005 Saudi Arabia Produces One Billion Cubic Meters Of Desalinated Water

Riyadh, 19 September, 2005

Saudi Arabia produced more than one billion cubic meters of desalinated water in 1424-1425 AH, through 30 desalination stations at the Red Sea and Arab Gulf coasts.

Realizing the importance of desalinated water, the Saudi Government has spent billions of riyals in setting up these water desalination stations.

In 1394 AH, a Royal decree was issued for the establishment of the Saline Water Conversion Corporation (SWCC) as an independent organisation.

The Jubail water desalination station is considered as the biggest water desalination station in the world.

A report issued by SWCC said the corporation has recently set up a number of water desalination stations, as well as pipelines.

Recently, the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz, when he was the Crown Prince, patronized the inaugural ceremony of the second phase of the projects of water desalination and power generation at Al-Shuaibiya, in addition to a system of transport of the desalinated water to Makkah, Jeddah and Taif.

The report said arrangements were underway to complete the pipelines of Riyadh/Sudeir/Al-Washam/Al-Qassim.

The SWCC has established 27 water pumping stations next to 147 reservoirs with a capacity of more than 8,616,000 cubic meters.

The report noted that SR58,756,356,122 was spent on the SWCC projects up to the end of 1424-1425 AH, while SR21,660,459,533 was spent on the operation and maintenance of the desalination stations.

In 1407 AH, the SWCC established a research and development center in Jubail. The five laboratories in the center are provided with the most sophisticated equipment.

Realizing the importance of training of the national cadres, the SWCC established, in 1402 AH, a training and rehabilitation center in Jubail.

Since 1418 AH, the SWCC has been carrying out a national plan to make the citizens aware of the importance of rationalizing water consumption.
