The preparatory forum of Muslim scholars and thinkers for the extraordinary Islamic summit, organized by Jeddah-based Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC), began its deliberations here today
Addressing the forum's inaugural session, Dr Nizar Madani, the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, said the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the cradle of Islam, realizing its responsibility towards challenges facing the Muslim nation, believes in the importance of the meeting of the Muslim leadersin facilitating an exchange views on challenges facing the Muslim nation, and formulating a working plan for tackling problems that obstruct the aspirations of Muslims.
Dr Madani pointed out that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has hosted this forum to prepare for the convening of the extraordinary Islamic summit, .'The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is fully aware of the significant role that can be played by the Ulema in the service of the Muslim interests', he said. Dr Madani hoped that the Islamic extraordinary summit would have a positive impact on the future of the Muslim nation.
For his part, Dr Akmaluddin Ihsan Oghlu, the OIC's Secretary General, said the forum is convened in line with the directives of the Custodian of the two Holy Mosques King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz. He quoted the King as saying: 'It is an invitation to close ranks and enhance relations among the Muslims'.
Dr Oghlu noted that the phenomenon of extremism in the Muslim world is a result of backwardness and economic and social problems facing the Muslims. 'These problems are accompanied by feelings of political injustice in some countries and disappointment for the general situation in the Muslim world' he said, noting that some of the extremists have exploited this situation to perpetrate acts that run counter to the teachings of Islam.
The 3-day forum includes eight working sessions.
Three committees have been formed: the first committee will review problems pertaining to the Islamic thought, education and social and cultural affairs; the second committee will review issues pertaining to political affairs and media; while the third committee will review problems pertaining to economy, the sciences and technology.
