06Sep2005 Prince Saud Warns 'Terrorism' Danger To Global Peace And Security

Riyadh, 6 September, 2005

Prince Saud Al-Faisal, the Foreign Minister, has warned against the phenomenon of terrorism, and said this phenomenon constitutes the great challenge that faces the forthcoming international summit, due to be held at the United Nations.

He noted that so many countries have been suffering from terrorism, which undermines global peace and security, and hinders not only the process of international development, but also the ongoing efforts to settle conflicts in various parts of the world.

Prince Saud urged the 60th session of the UN's General Assembly to take a firm stand vis-à-vis terrorism.

Citing the international conference for fighting terrorism, hosted by Riyadh last February with the participation of 45 countries and eight international and regional organizations, Prince Saud said the success attained by the conference and its important recommendations make it necessary to go ahead on the path of fighting terrorism.

He pointed out that the proposal pertaining to the establishment of an international center for combating terrorism has earned great importance, and it has been adopted by the Arab Summit, the Arab-Latin American Summit and the Islamic Foreign Ministers.

Prince Saud said the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has proposed to the UN's Secretary General and to the governments of countries which participated in the international conference for combating terrorism, held in Riyadh, to try to obtain a resolution from the UN's General Assembly for adopting the Declaration of Riyadh pertaining to combating terrorism as well as the resolutions of the conference, notably the proposal of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz relating to the establishment of an international center for combating terrorism.

'The issuance of such a resolution will enhance the ongoing international efforts for fighting terrorism, and will boost the international organizations, like the UN's Committee for Combating Terrorism and the Interpol,', he said adding that such a development will make it possible to exchange information by the national and regional centers, and will further more impede the movements of terrorists and their organizations.

Prince Saud made it clear that the proposed international center for combating terrorism aims at deepening understanding of the roots of this phenomenon, and subsequently it will help with considering means of its tackling and containment.
