Jeddah, 10 July 2005

The amount of SR15 billion will be allocated to solve water shortage and sewage problems in Jeddah over the next five years, according to the Water and Power Ministe,r Abdullah bin Abdul-Rahman Al-Hussain.

The Arabic daily Al-Madina quoted Al-Hussain as saying that all districts in Jeddah are continuously supplied with water.

He said that construction of the new water station in Shoiba will solve water supply problems in Jeddah, Makkah, Taif and parts of the Baha region.

He estimated water losses within the national water network at 20 percent, saying that SR300 million has been allocated in this year's national budget to reduce losses.

In addition to the Shoiba water project, Al-Hussain said his Ministry had recently signed a SR1 bn contract to build a sewage network in northern Jeddah. A similar project is being negotiated for southern Jeddah.

Al-Hussain said building of the new water treatment station in northern Jeddah, with a total capacity of 250,000 cubic meters, is going ahead full steam.

He said the Kingdom has the best water rationalization policy in the world, citing the Government's efforts to distribute water rationalization devices, free of charge, to households.
