Under the directives of Crown Prince Abdullah bin Abdulaziz, the Deputy Premier and Commander of the National Guard, the mother of Egyptian twins (Ala'a and Wala'a) was admitted to the King Abdulaziz Medical City for the National Guard in Riyadh on 19 April, 2005 as an emergency case. A caesarian surgery was conducted and the twins were born and taken to the intensive care unit (ICU). The twins were joined at the abdomen and under the chest.
The Executive Director General of the Health Affairs at the National Guard, Dr. Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Al-Rabieah and the Pediatric Consultants, declared that a multi-specialist medical team was formed under Dr Al-Rabieah chairmanship. The necessary medical check-ups including blood, liver and kidneys' tests have been conducted prior to the separation surgery.
"In the light of problems detected in Wala'a's heart, the medical team has decided to separate the twins as an emergency basis. A surgery will be conducted next Saturday and will last for 10 hours and in seven phases," he said.
This is the 10th twin separation surgery in the Kingdom. All previous ones have been successful.
