22May2005 Saudi Doctor invents new technique to treat Leshmania disease

A Saudi doctor has achieved progress in using a new technique to treat the effects of Leshmania disease which causes skin deformation on the face particularly around the nose.

Dr. Mamdouh Ashi, who has Ph.D. degree in Cosmetic Surgery and Burns from Germany, said that he has treated for the first time 20 cases by putting a small sized capsule around the scar on the nose which increases the skin area surrounding the scar, [enabling the surgeon] to remove it. The skin turns back to normal. He noted that the disease is caused by mosquitoes spreading in some regions in the south of the Kingdom
