31Mar2005 League for Saudi Authors

Riyadh, 31 Mar 2005

The Chairman of Culture, Information and Youth Committee at the Shoura (Consultative) Council, Hamad Bin Abdullah Al-Qadi, has expressed his happiness at the Shoura Council's approval for the establishment of a league for Saudi authors and writers, and formulating a system for it.

"In the name of the members of the committee, I appreciate the Chairman of the Shoura Council, Sheikh Saleh Bin Humaid, and other members of the Shoura Council for their support for this idea and providing their opinions through an in-depth discussion of the issue in Monday and Tuesday sessions this week," Al-Qadi said.

He added that the most important goals of this league are to promote the cultural movement in the Kingdom, protect authors' rights, help them morally and materially, contribute to printing their publications and organize their representation outside the Kingdom.

He pointed out that the league will be independent and that Shoura Council's role is just to formulate its system and specify its responsibilities prior to the setting up of the league. "Subsequently, the Ministry of Culture and Information will form a foundation committee to choose the members of the public committee. They will then elect the board of directors."

Concluding his statement, Al-Qadi said that male and female authors, without discrimination, will benefit from the league as stated in the system. "The League will be an integrator and supporter of all those activities of government and private cultural establishments in which authors participate.
