10Feb2005 Voting goes smoothly in Riyadh municipal election

Riyadh, 10 Feb 2005

Voting in 140 ballot centers to elect 14 members of Riyadh Region Municipal Council went smoothly, reported the elections monitoring committee.

In a press conference following the closure of balloting in Riyadh region this evening, Dr. Bandar bin Mohammed Alhajjar, Chairman of the Elections Monitoring Commission, said the monitoring panel, consisting several independent bodies like the Saudi Human Rights, Bar Association, Journalists Association, Media and Communications Panel, Geographical Society, Saudi Economics Society and Saudi Accountants Association, noted no violations that could nullify the polling at any center.

However, he cited minor incidents like the presence of some candidates or their associates outside the centers trying to lure voters for one nominee or another.

He concluded that minor mishaps could be avoided in future experience when the commission moves to the rest of the kingdom's regions.
