An official source at the Interior Ministry issued a further statement on the attack on the U.S. consulate in Jeddah:
Five members of the deviant group threw grenades at one of the gates of the U.S. consulate in Jeddah at 11:00am on Monday 6th December 2004, as a consulate car was entering the compound. They then entered the consulate, attempted to set fire to one of its buildings, and attacked those present at the scene.
The security authorities responded immediately, surrounding the assailants and killing three of them. The remaining two militants were wounded, and one later died in hospital.
The attack resulted in five deaths at the scene. The victims included a Yemeni, a Sudanese, a Filipino, a Pakistani and a Sri Lankan citizen. Two Yemenis, two Pakistanis, a Lebanese, a Filipino, an Indian and a Sri Lankan citizen sustained injuries.
Five security men were injured, some of whom have been discharged from hospital.
The Interior Ministry reiterated its determination to combat militants and defend the stability and security of the Kingdom.
