04Oct2004 Plans underway to construct $3 billion Saudi-Egyptian causeway

Cairo, 4th October 2004

Egyptian Minister of Transport Essam Sharaf said that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Egypt are planning to establish a causeway across the Red Sea to link the Saudi port of Diba with the Egyptian port of Sharam Al-Sheikh.

In a press statement today, he said that implementation of the project would depend on technical studies which are currently underway. The project is estimated to cost $3 billion.

Upon completion of the project, the causeway will facilitate the transportation of pilgrims, Umrah performers, tourists and commodities.
