30Sep2004 Crown Prince Abdullah stresses importance of water conservation

Riyadh, 30th September 2004

Crown Prince Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz, the Deputy Premier and Commander of the National Guard, said that all citizens and residents must play their part in water conservation in the Kingdom.

In a statement marking the launch of a national campaign to promote awareness about water rationalization and conservation, which will commence on Saturday, Crown Prince Abdullah said: “We have to conserve water and set an example for the international community in water conservation and rationalization.”

The Crown Prince said that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is one of the poorest countries of the world in terms of water resources and depends on water desalination, which is expensive, and ground-water resources, which are not renewable. “Despite water scarcity and high costs of producing desalinated water, we find that average daily consumption in the Kingdom is one of the highest in the world,” said Crown Prince Abdullah.

He noted that the Ministry of Water and Electricity will launch the national campaign for awareness and conservation of water, which aims to ensure that citizens are fully informed of the importance of consuming water carefully. The Ministry will distribute free conservation tools, which enable citizens to reduce their consumption to the one-third of the current average usage.

“I would like to remind all citizens and residents to cooperate with the concerned bodies to reduce water consumption and install these tools immediately,” the Crown Prince said.
