An official source at the Interior Ministry said that security forces located a suspected militant in the area of the holy sites in Makkah.
The man threw a hand grenade at security forces when they approached him, whereupon a security official shot him dead.
Security authorities are currently investigating the incident and have surrounded the area to ensure it is thoroughly searched.
