08Aug2004 Saudi relief delegation leaves for Darfur

Riyadh, 8th August 2004

A Saudi relief delegation, led by President of the Saudi Red Crescent Society Dr Abdulrahman Al-Suweilim today departed the Kingdom for Darfur to investigate the situation there and the humanitarian aid requirements.

The delegation is undertaking the trip in accordance with the directives of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Fahd bin Abdul Aziz and Crown Prince Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz, the Deputy Premier and Commander of the National Guard, to extend all possible assistance to the displaced people in the province.

In a statement to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA), Dr Al-Suweilim said that the delegation’s visit to Darfur will be followed by the departure of the Saudi medical and relief delegation to the province, tasked with extending the required assistance to the displaced people. He expressed hope that the Saudi relief delegation, in cooperation with the Sudanese government and people and international organizations, would be capable of performing its mission to serve the people of Darfur. The delegation comprises a number of specialists for the provision of relief assistance.
