26Jul2004 Saudi Cabinet weekly meeting

Crown Prince Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz, Deputy Premier and Commander of the National Guard, on Monday chaired the Cabinet’s weekly meeting at Al-Salam Palace in Jeddah.

At the outset of the meeting, the Cabinet expressed the Kingdom’s welcome of the statement issued by U.S. Congress on the 9/11 events and the Kingdom’s efforts to combat terrorism. The Kingdom welcomed proposals on anti-terrorism cooperation and promoting dialogue.

In a statement to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) following the meeting, the Minister of Social Affairs and Acting Minister of Culture and Information Dr Ali bin Ibrahim Al-Namlah said that the Crown Prince briefed the Cabinet on talks held by Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Fahd bin Abdul Aziz and the Crown Prince with Pakistan’s Premier Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain. The talks covered recent developments in Islamic and international arenas and means of enhancing bilateral relations between the two countries.

The Cabinet reviewed reports on the latest regional and international developments.

The Cabinet praised the final statement issued by the 6th meeting of Foreign Ministers of Iraq’s neighbouring countries. The statement welcomed the transfer of authority to the Iraqi Interim Government, stressed Iraq’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and political independence, and supported the Iraqi Government’s efforts effectively to assume its political and security responsibilities.

The Cabinet called upon Palestinians to unite to confront Israeli aggressive practices and achieve security and stability.

The Cabinet condemned Israeli aggression against southern Lebanon, reiterating its call for the international community, led by the United Nations, to confront Israel’s violation of legitimate international resolutions and thwarting of all efforts to achieve peace in the region. The Cabinet noted the ruling of the International Court of Justice on the illegitimacy of the wall of racial segregation constructed by Israel in occupied Palestinian territories.

The Cabinet then reviewed items on its domestic agenda and approved amendments to the basic law of the International Tourism Organization.

The Cabinet approved the final accounts of the Human Resources Development Fund and the Ministry of Finance issuance of the credit support agreement of Al-Shoaibah 3 project for water and electricity. The Cabinet authorized the Minister of Finance to sign credit support agreements for similar water and electricity projects (Al-Jubail, Ras Al-Zoor and Al-Shqaiq).

The Cabinet approved two 14th grade government appointments.
