21Jul2004 Security forces kill two militants in shootout

Riyadh, 21st July 2004

An Interior Ministry source announced that Saudi security forces killed two militants and wounded three others in a raid on a suspected militant hideout.

When investigating a suspected militant residence in a densely populated area of Riyadh on Tuesday, security forces came under attack by militants using various weapons, including bombs and grenades. The security forces returned fire, killing two militants and wounding three others.

The militants present at the site were arrested and the family of Saleh Al-Aufi, who is wanted by security authorities, was detained. The family of Al-Aufi includes his wife and three children.

During the shootout between security men and militants, another group emerged and attacked the security forces in attempt to rescue their encircled militant associates. The group later fled, and are being pursued by security forces.

Three security men sustained minor injuries during the shootout. Weapons, explosives and various documents were seized at the site. Further details will be announced imminently.
