The Foreign Ministers of Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member states concluded their 91st session of the Ministerial Council here today.
In a final statement, the Ministers condemned the terrorist acts that took place in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, resulting the death, injury and suffering of innocent people. They stressed the solidarity of their countries with the Kingdom’s determined efforts to combat terrorism.
The statement praised the proficiency and readiness of Saudi security authorities to confront militants who aim to undermine the stability and security of society for innocent citizens, distorting the true values and teachings of Islam. The Council denounced all forms of extremism, violence and terrorism, and welcomed the signing of a GCC agreement on combating terrorism in Kuwait on 4 May.
The Council reiterated its support for the sovereignty rights of the United Arab Emirates to the islands of Lesser and Greater Tunb and Abu Mousa, which are currently occupied by Iran.
The Council praised the positive results of the recent Arab Summit meeting in Tunisia, stressing the importance of the pledge of solidarity endorsed by the Summit.
The statement welcomed the signing of protocols between the Sudanese government and the Sudan Liberation Movement, wishing for the Sudanese people security, stability and prosperity.
The Ministers stressed their commitment to the Arab Peace Initiative for the achievement of a just, comprehensive settlement for the region. They called for activation of the Quartet Committee and its cooperation with the Arab Peace Initiative Committee to unify efforts to achieve peace in the region.
They expressed their regret over the U.S. decision to impose sanctions on Syria, hoping that the decision would be reviewed and constructive dialogue be pursued to resolve all outstanding issues in service of mutual interests.
The statement called upon Israel and the international community to rid the Middle East of all weapons of mass destruction.
The Council congratulated Iraqi President Sheikh Ghazi Ajeel Yawar and Premier Iyad Allawi of the Interim Government on assuming their posts, which it considered an important step in handing over sovereignty to the Iraqi people. The Council emphasized the crucial role of the United Nations in preparing auspicious conditions for the transfer of sovereignty to the Iraqi people by 30 June.
