29Feb2004 SGS exploration project for industrial minerals

Jeddah, 29th February 2004

The Saudi Geological Survey (SGS) is currently executing an exploration program for industrial minerals, which is considered the most important of its kind and will promote growth of the national economy.

The program is aimed at preparing a comprehensive technical study of specific sites for industrial minerals, and to promote research in mineral exploration, as part of the national goal of attaining self-sufficiency in this field.

The tasks and duties of the SGS are similar to those of most geological surveys worldwide, and include mapping, grass-root minerals exploration, geo-hazard and geo-environmental studies, hydro-geological studies and studies on services for the community.

The SGS maintains support teams of geophysicists, remote sensors, GIS and database specialists, and has laboratory and publication facilities, which enable it to provide a full range of information on the Kingdom.

SGS also has the flexibility to operate abroad and can form partnerships with private companies or other earth science agencies.
