Saudi Arabia is to set up region’s first prosthetic heart transplantation unit at King Abdul Aziz Medical City, according to Dr Hani Najm, head of the cardiac department.
In a press statement published today, Dr Najm said that the unit was set up under the directives of Crown Prince Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz, the Deputy Premier and Commander of the National Guard.
Dr Najm said that prosthetic hearts, which cost SR2 million each, will help patients with weak heart muscles who cannot be treated by traditional means. “The establishment of the unit will provide new hope for patients suffering from chronic heart disease in this country,” he said, adding that it would be the first such unit in the region.
