Riyadh, 27th February 2004

The President of the Iraqi Governing Council, Dr Mohsin Abdulhameed, praised the stance of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in support of the Iraqi people.

Addressing a press conference here last night, he expressed his thanks and appreciation for the Kingdom’s readiness to support Iraqi political, economic and trade affairs.

He noted the Kingdom’s keenness to promote the restoration of security in Iraq. “Saudi officials have stressed that closely observing Saudi-Iraqi borders. Controlling the border is not, however, the responsibility of just one side. We and the occupation forces are also responsible for maintaining the security of borders,” he said.

He condemned attacks on Iraqi policemen, noting that these attacks are aimed at preventing the Iraqi people from gaining independence. He said that attacks on the occupation forces will end when Iraq becomes independent.

Dr Abdulhameed noted that there are discussions underway to find alternatives to the current Governing Council when it has completed its term.
