19Jan2004 Jeddah Economic Forum continues meetings

Jeddah, 19th January 2004

The Jeddah Economic Forum continued its meetings here on Monday. Various speakers addressed today’s session, which was attended by Prince Abdul Aziz bin Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz, Advisor at the Crown Prince’s Court.

Former U.S. President Bill Clinton gave a speech, in which he praised the initiative of Crown Prince Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz, the Deputy Premier and Commander of the National Guard, to achieve peace in the Middle East region. He described the Crown Prince as the first leader who submitted a vision for settlement of the Middle East conflict. He lauded the enduring, distinguished relations between the Kingdom and the United States of America. Bill Clinton was attending the Forum for the second time.

Dr Mohammed Sorour Al-Sabban, Senior Advisor to the Saudi Petroleum Minister, reviewed Kingdom’s oil policy, noting that the taxes imposed by some countries raise concern in the Kingdom. He said that the Kingdom operates at the international level and works to distribute its products to world markets. He called on countries to diversify their economic resources to maintain surplus energy supplies and achieve oil stability.

Peter Robertson, Deputy Chairman of the Board of Directors of Chevron Texaco Company, said that the Kingdom has great oil reserves, and bears significant responsibility for the stability of the world markets. He stressed that Chevron will enhance cooperation with Saudi Aramco, and expressed his appreciation of the opportunity to invest in, and cooperate with the Kingdom.

The session was also addressed by former Mexican President Ernesto Zedillo; Sweden’s Minister of Economic Affairs and International Markets, Jonar Lund; Dr Rai Irani, Chairman of the Board of Directors and Chief Executive Officer of Occidental Petroleum Company, and Dean of Harvard College for Businesses John Quelsh.
