01Dec2003 Prince Sultan receives Arab-European prize for peace and environment

Raka, Saudi Arabia, 1st December 2003

Prince Sultan bin Abdul Aziz, the Second Deputy Premier, Minister of Defence and Aviation and Inspector General, on Sunday received the prize for peace and environment from the Arab-European Cooperation Centre in recognition of his efforts in the service of environment and his constant pursuit for just and comprehensive peace around the world. Prince Sultan is also Head of the Ministerial Committee for Environment and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the National Commission for Wildlife Conservation and Development (NCWCD).

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Abdul Aziz Abu Zinada, NCWCD Secretary General, highlighted the achievements of Prince Sultan bin Abdul Aziz in the field of environmental and food security. He noted that Prince Sultan was also named among the top ten personalities who have demonstrated determination to foster preservation of the environment worldwide.

Dr Abu Zinada said that Prince Sultan bin Abdul Aziz is the third winner of the Prize for Peace and the Environment from the Arab-European Cooperation Centre, adding that Prince Sultan has also received the International Prize of Sheikh Rashid in recognition of his humanitarian services.

Dr Volvgang Arens, President of the Arab-European Cooperation Centre, stressed the importance of peaceful co-existence among nations, irrespective of their language, religion and civilization. He noted that the Arab-European Cooperation Centre previously awarded the prize to Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and his French counterpart, Jacques Chirac, in recognition of their significant role in promoting peace and environmental awareness, and dialogue among nations.

Addressing Prince Sultan, Dr Arens said: “The Board of Directors of the Arab-European Cooperation Centre made a unanimous decision to name you winner of the Prize.” Dr Arens spoke about Prince Sultan’s call to confront and defeat all forms of terrorism, and his support to promote dialogue between nations.

Prince Sultan bin Abdul Aziz stressed the importance of enhancing cooperation between Arab and European countries in the fields of environmental protection, science and technology, and cultural exchange. He said that peace is an essential element for the attainment of progress and development, and that his nomination as prize winner is a recognition of the Kingdom’s role in service of the environment and in promoting peace worldwide.

The function was attended by Prince Mohammed bin Fahd bin Abdul Aziz, Governor of the Eastern region.

The Arab-European Cooperation Centre is a non-governmental organization which was established in Germany by a group of Arab and European scientists, specialists and politicians. It aims to promote better understanding, which paves the way for enhanced cooperation in the fields of science, technology and environmental protection, and promoting better welfare and opportunity for children and women. The Centre cooperates with a number of Arab and European organizations, including the Municipality of Madinah, Syrian and Egyptian governments, and the Municipality of Dubai. It also offers consultative services in the fields of sciences, technology and environmental sciences.
