05Nov2003 Interior Ministry issues details of foiled terrorist plots in Makkah

Riyadh, 5th November 2003

A source at the Interior Ministry today added details to the previous statement issued on a terrorist plot foiled by security forces in Makkah.

The source said that a security patrol besieged two villas in Al-Khadraa district in Makkah, after receiving intelligence information that a group of suspected terrorists were taking refuge in the buildings. In spite of warnings by security forces to surrender and spare their lives and those of neighbouring residents, the terrorists opened fire on the security men and tried to flee. Two of the terrorists were killed as they attempted to escape. Authorities confiscated large quantities of explosives and ammunition. One security official sustained minor injuries.

Pursuit of the fugitives resulted in the arrest of five terrorists, four Saudis and one Nigerian national. Weapons and materials found in the terrorists’ cars and the buildings used for shelter included explosives, guns, pistols, hand grenades, boosters, detonators, telecommunication devices, electric appliances, computers, hard discs, large quantities of money, and military and female costumes.

The source stressed the danger of such security operations, and lauded the success of security officials in foiling the terrorist plots and protecting the lives and property of citizens and expatriate residents. Investigations are underway to apprehend members of the terrorist cell who remain at large. Citizens who provide any form of refuge or assistance to the fugitives will be severely punished.
