03Nov2003 Security forces abort terrorist plot

Riyadh, 3rd November 2003

Saudi security forces on Monday successfully aborted terrorist activities in a quarter of Makkah.

An official source at the Interior Ministry said that at 8:00am on Monday 3 November 2003, security forces encircled two sites in Al-Shara’ei quarter, Makkah. The terrorists located at the site fired heavily at the security officials, using machine guns, and threw hand grenades. The security men immediately returned fire. When the terrorists tried to flee in two cars, security officers killed two of the terrorists.

A significant quantity of weapons and bombs were found in the terrorists’ cars, and a number of machine guns, pistols, hand grenades, and other items, including passports, identity cards and pamphlets, were found at the sites in Al-Shara’ei. Investigations are underway to pursue and apprehend the men who escaped the security forces. Further information will be issued imminently.

The official source noted that there were no casualties among citizens or security officials, with the exception of one minor injury.
