20Oct2003 Saudi Cabinet weekly meeting

The Saudi Cabinet stressed the importance of national unity, confronting extremism and terrorism, and countering the harm done by terrorist groups to the image of Islam, which is a religion of peace and moderation among Muslims and in relation to non-Muslims.

The Cabinet noted the call by Crown Prince Abdullah for the formation of a five-member “'Islamic Peace Committee”, which will discuss and seek to resolve outstanding issues of concern among Muslims and between Muslims and others. The Crown Prince also called for member countries of the Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC) to confront and correct immoderate, terrorist ideologies, and to provide guidance for Muslim by expanding Islamic jurisprudence authorities.

The Cabinet expressed appreciation for the success of the visit by Crown Prince Abdullah to Pakistan, and for the warm welcome and hospitality accorded by President Pervez Musharraf, and the Pakistani government and people. The Cabinet praised the distinguished relations binding the two countries, characterised by solidarity and cooperation to serve the mutual interests of the two peoples and the Muslim nation.

The Cabinet noted the suffering of the Palestinian people as a result of the continued aggression of Israeli occupying forces, and urged Muslim countries and the international community to provide material and moral support for the Palestinian people, so that they may acquire their legitimate rights, including the establishment of a Palestinian state with Al-Quds (Jerusalem) as its capital.

The Cabinet reviewed items on its domestic agenda, and issued the following decisions:

The Council of Ministers approved a unified security strategy to combat extremism for Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member states.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs or his deputy was authorized to discuss with the Azeri side, and sign a memorandum of understanding on political consultation between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan. The authorization covers similar memoranda with other countries. The final versions will be forwarded for further approval.

The Cabinet approved the decisions taken by GCC Summits in Riyadh, Manama, and Doha in 1420/1421/1423H respectively on labour-related matters.

The Cabinet approved the appointment of Dr Saeed bin Adbul Aziz bin Abdulrahman Al-Thimali as Manager of the Public Security Hospital, an affiliate of the Interior Ministry; Fahd bin Abdullah bin Ahmed Al-Dakkan as Director General of General Accounts at the Ministry of Finance, and Ghazi bin Abdurab Al-Rasool Ameen Al-Jailani as Assistant Undersecretary for Planning and Research at the Ministry of Health.
