The Minister of Commerce and Industry, Dr Hashim Yamani, on Saturday opened a National Centre for Mathematics and Physics at King Abdul Aziz City for Sciences and Technology (KACST).
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Ali Al-Hajari, Head of the Saudi Physics Society, said that the Centre would promote the development of scientific research in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. He noted that the first meeting for the Saudi Physics Society would be held on 9-10 December 2003, under the title: “Physics and Development in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia”.
Dr Salih Al-Azl, the President of KACST, said that the Centre would extend facilities and services to researchers, and would enhance cooperation between Saudi researchers and their counterparts in other countries through conferences, symposiums and workshops.
Dr Yamani stressed the importance of mathematics and physics, and highlighted their significant role in the development of society.
The inaugural ceremony for the Centre was attended by a number of prominent scientists and officials. At a workshop organized on the occasion, aspects of cooperation in the field of scientific research between Saudi Universities and KACST were discussed.
