The planned expansion of King Abdul Aziz International Airport (KAIA), the largest in its history,
is designed to increase the airport’s capacity to exceed 21 million passengers, Arab News reported today.
The paper said that the project includes the construction of two new terminals, the renovation of the southern terminal, and the establishment of twenty-five air bridges.
Prince Fahd bin Abdullah, the Assistant Defence and Aviation Minister for Civil Aviation Affairs, said that work on the multi-billion-riyal project would commence imminently. He said that the work would require careful planning, in order that it not disrupt existing air traffic.
According to a report published by Asharq Al-Awsat in March, Bechtel Saudi Arabia and Dar Al-Riyadh will carry out the expansion project. The Civil Aviation Authority will sign an agreement worth SR5.6 billion with the two companies. Seven international companies had bid to win the contract.
The project is expected to coordinate all international flights, including those of Saudi Arabian Airlines, and facilitate the movement of passengers.
