13Oct2003 Saudi Cabinet weekly meeting

Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Fahd bin Abdul Aziz today chaired the Cabinet meeting held at Al-Yamamah Palace in Riyadh.

At the outset of the session, King Fahd briefed the Cabinet on meetings and discussions held during recent days with officials representing various countries and international organizations.

In a statement to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) following the session, the Minister of Culture and Information, Dr Fouad bin Abdulsalam Al-Farsy said that the Cabinet was briefed on recent developments in the region and the international arena, particularly in the occupied Palestinian territories and Iraq.

The Cabinet stressed the dangers of Israel’s aggressive practices, which threaten to destroy efforts to promote peace and security in the region, particularly the recent attack on the Arab Republic of Syria. The Cabinet urged the international community to enforce resolutions of international legitimacy, in order to establish the Road Map to peace upon firm bases.

The Cabinet reviewed a number of domestic projects, including the inauguration by Crown Prince Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz, of the Kingdom’s ninth power generation station, which has cost over SR5 billion. King Fahd emphasized the significance of the water sector, and stressed that all health, economic, security, social and cultural projects are established to promote the interests of the homeland and citizens. The King also affirmed the importance of conserving electricity and water.

The Cabinet then reviewed the items on its agenda, and took the following decisions:

The Minister of Foreign Affairs or his deputy was authorized to sign a draft memorandum of understanding between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Republic of the Sudan to set up a political consultation follow-up committee and to forward the final version for approval.

The Cabinet authorized the Minister of Higher Education or his deputy to draft and sign a memorandum of understanding on scientific and educational cooperation between the Ministry of Higher Education of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research of the Peoples Democratic Republic of Algeria.

The Cabinet authorized the Minister of Health or his deputy to draft and sign a memorandum of understanding on cooperation in the field of health and medical sciences between the Ministry of Health of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Ministry of Health of the Czech Republic.

The Cabinet approved the appointment of Saad bin Mohammed bin Abdullah Al-Salim as Security Consultant at the Interior Ministry; Fahd bin Nassir bin Mohammed Al-Hotan as Director General of Financial Affairs at the Interior Ministry, and Abdullah bin Ateeq bin Abdulrahman Al-Fawaz as Legal Expert, category B, at the Expert Commission, an affiliate of the Council of Ministers.
