18Sep2003 Statistics on ports in Saudi Arabia

The ports of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, in the last 26 years, have handled about 1,600,000,000 tons of goods.

The Kingdom's eight ports, which have 183 wharves, are capable of receiving the biggest ships in the world. The ports which have up-to-date guidance systems and navigation facilities work around the clock.

During the fiscal year 1421-1422 AH, the Kingdom's ports handled about 100.6 million ton of exported and imported goods, excluding crude oil.

The exports, which amounted to 68.9 million ton, constituted 68.5 percent of the total handled goods, including refined petroleum products, petrochemical materials and industrial materials.

The volume of imports, which included food and building materials, as well as raw materials and consumer goods, amounted to 31.7 million ton.

In 1421-1422 AH the Saudi ports received 10,563 ships.

In line with the directives of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Fahd bin Abdulaziz, the Ports Authority has been giving utmost attention to the service of the pilgrims.

During the year 1421-1422 AH, about 1,799,032 passengers passed through the Kingdom's ports. This is an increase of about 716,000 passengers on the previous year’s figure.

The Islamic Port of Jeddah and King Abdulaziz Port of Dammam have shipyards and floating docks.

During the fiscal year 1421-1422 AH, the Ports Authority trained about 828 employees at the trainings centers of the Islamic Port of Jeddah and King Abdulaziz Port of Dammam.
