17Sep2003 Update on fire in Al Haer prison

Riyadh, 17th September, 2003

In a statement updating information about the victims of fire, which occurred in Al Haer Penitentiary in the city of Riyadh on Monday, Director General of the General Administration of Prisons of the Ministry of Interior detailed the nationalities and crimes of the 67 people who died in the fire as follows:

1) Fifty prisoners were Saudis. They were jailed for offences of murder, attack, kidnapping, sodomy, alcohol, rape, theft and narcotics.

2) Five were of Yemeni nationality. They were jailed for offences of narcotics and paper and identity fraud.

3) Three were from Chad. They were jailed for theft.

4) Two were Jordanian. They were jailed for theft and narcotics.

5) Two were Somalian. They were jailed for attack and theft.

6) One was Sudanese. He was jailed for identity falsification.

7) One was Eritrian. He was jailed for theft.

8) One was Ethiopian. He was jailed for theft.

9) One was Palestinian. He was jailed for theft.

10) One was Bengali. He was jailed for narcotics.
