16Sep2003 Prince Turki leads Saudi delegation to UN meeting

Jeddah, 16th September 2003

Prince Turki bin Nasir bin Abdul Aziz, President of Meteorology and Protection of the Environment, participated in the meetings of the Governing Council of the UN in Geneva.

The Council reviewed the Kingdom’s demands for compensation for environmental damage caused by the Gulf War in 1991.

In a speech during the meeting, Prince Turki said that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia suffered the most environmental damage from the war, including the burning of hundreds of oil wells and the spilling of millions of barrels of oil in the Gulf waters. An oil slick of over 11,000,000 barrels resulted in the world’s largest ever oil pollution.

Sea resources are considered the main natural resource in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for future generations. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has exerted its utmost efforts to deal with the pollution, and requests all possible support to enable it to restore normal environment in the region.
