06Sep2003 National Guard wins UNESCO Prize for Eradication of Illiteracy

Riyadh, 6th September 2003

The Cultural and Educational Affairs Agency, an affiliate of the National Guard of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, has won King Sijong’s International Prize for the Eradication of Illiteracy for the year 2003, a prestigious annual award granted by UNESCO for prominent work and achievements in the field, it was reported here today.

The report quoted UNESCO Director General Koichiro Matsuura saying that the certificate for the eradication of illiteracy was awarded by UNESCO to the National Guard in recognition of their efforts to eradiate illiteracy, following a decision by UNESCO’s Arbitration Committee, which bears responsibility for the prize, during a meeting in Paris held between 19 and 23 May 2003.
