04Sep2003 Saudi-Russian statement on cooperation

Moscow, 4th September 2003

A joint Saudi-Russian statement was issued today, at the end of the visit of Crown Prince Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz, Deputy Premier and Commander of the National Guard, to Russia.

The statement said that the two sides agreed to cooperate to promote a settlement for just, enduring peace in the Middle East, based on United Nations Security Council resolutions numbers 242, 338 and 1397, the concept of land for peace, the Arab initiative approved by the Beirut Summit, and the “Road map” plan.

The two sides expressed support for international Quartet Committee, and stressed the right of Palestinians to establish an independent, sovereign state with Al-Quds (Jerusalem) as its capital.

The two sides called for resumption of negotiations between Syria and Lebanon.

On the Iraq issue, the two sides stressed the importance of maintaining the independence, unity and sovereignty of Iraq, and of strengthening the role of the United Nations and the international community.

The two sides supported ridding the Middle East region of weapons of mass destruction, including nuclear weapons.

They condemned all forms of terrorism, and expressed their determination to fight it in cooperation with the international community, in accordance with international law and the Charter of the United Nations.

The Saudi side expressed appreciation and understanding of Russia’s desire to expand its cooperation with Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC).

The statement stressed the intentions of the two sides to boost bilateral cooperation in various fields, including economic and energy sectors. It listed the cooperation agreements that were signed during the visit, and said that the two sides will promote further agreements in the future.

An invitation was extended to, and accepted by, Russian President Vladimir Putin to visit the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The date of the visit will be established imminently.
