Following Saudi-Polish talks, which Prince Sultan bin Abdul Aziz, Second Deputy Premier, Minister of Defence and Aviation and Inspector General, co-chaired with the Polish Minister of Defense, Jerzy Szmajdzinski, Prince Sultan today told reporters that a Saudi-Polish Joint Committee, comprising officials representing various fields of mutual interest, is scheduled to commence meetings in Riyadh tonight.
Prince Sultan said that, following Committee meetings, the outcome would be forwarded to the Saudi government for approval of aspects of enhanced cooperation between the two countries. A Saudi Military Attaché will soon be appointed in Poland, and the two countries will exchange visits of high-level officials to boost economic relations.
Requested to comment on reports that Saudis have been involved in terrorist attacks abroad, Prince Sultan referred the questioner to the statement by the Foreign Ministry in this regard.
In reference to the presence of Polish peacekeeping troops in Iraq, Prince Sultan said that the Kingdom welcomes the presence of any peace-loving country that seeks to help the Iraqi people, stressing the Kingdom’s hop that such measures take place under the umbrella of the United Nations.
For his part, the Polish Minister of Defence described his talks with Prince Sultan as important and very fruitful. “In Poland, we consider the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia as one of the most important countries of the Middle East, with whom we hold very positive dialogue, and with whom would like to expand our military cooperation,” he said to reporters. He also noted that Prince Sultan has promised to visit Poland imminently.
Szmajdzinski said that his talks with Prince Sultan also covered the current situation in Iraq, and stressed the importance of bringing peace and security to the country. He said that the military presence of Poland in Iraq could be enhanced through cooperation with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
