30Aug2003 King Fahd addresses International Council for Mosques

Jeddah, 30th August 2003

In an address to the 19th session of the International Supreme Council for Mosques, held in Makkah today, Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Fahd bin Abdul Aziz stressed the importance of the social role of mosques, in accordance with the correct principles of Islam.

He said that the Kingdom supports the promotion of Islamic values through the mosque. The Kingdom, host to Islam’s two holiest mosques, looks forward to seeing Al-Aqsa Mosque in Al-Quds (Jerusalem) liberated, and returned to the Islamic fold, to enable Muslims from all over the world to travel to Islam’s third holiest destination and Qibla (direction of prayer).

He said that the Conference is taking place amid critical circumstances, in which terrorist organizations regrettably succeed in luring some youth to the wrong way of life. The King said that the mission of mosques will guide youth to the correct path of Islam, the religion of moderation, tolerance and wisdom. The mission of mosques is a mission of security, peace, and cooperation among peoples; a mission to distance people from grievance, aggression and evil.

The King paid tribute to efforts exerted by the Makkah-based Muslim World League (MWL) to defend Islam against foreign media campaigns over recent months.

In an address at the opening ceremony, Secretary General of the MWL, Dr Abdullah bin Abdulmohsin Al-Turki, said that the meeting comes amid great challenges to the Muslim world. He criticized what he called a lack of coordination among Islamic cultural and information institutions, and Ulema (scholars), who should supervised youth who fall under the influence of foreign cultural trends transmitted by satellite television.
