Rabat, 29th August 2003

The ninth session of the Saudi-Moroccan Joint Commission for Economic and Technical Cooperation on Thursday began its deliberations under the co-chairmanship of the Foreign Minister, Prince Saud Al-Faisal, and his Moroccan counterpart, Mohammed bin Eisa.

Addressing the inaugural session, Prince Saud Al-Faisal reiterated the keenness of the Saudi and Moroccan leadership to further enhance cooperation between the two countries. He noted that the Kingdom and Morocco have been promoting Arab solidarity in all spheres.

On the Middle East peace process, Prince Saud said that the Arab-Israeli conflict would be perpetuated until Israel honours its commitments and proves its credibility. He stressed the importance of extending all possible support to the Palestinian people.

On the Iraq issue, Prince Saud stressed the importance of preserving the country’s independence, unity and sovereignty. “The Saudi government is determined to extend all possible support to the Iraqi people,” he said, expressing his hope that the transitional Iraqi Governing Council would be a step towards the formation of a legitimate Iraqi government.

Prince Saud denounced the bombing of the UN offices in Baghdad, which killed a senior UN official.

Moroccan Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Eisa called for enhancing Saudi-Moroccan cooperation in all spheres. He expressed his hope that Saudi and Moroccan private sectors would boost economic development in both countries.

Bin Eias hailed the significant role played by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to enhance Arab and Islamic solidarity.

Representatives of the Saudi and Moroccan private sectors explored the available opportunities in the investment sphere, and means of boosting trade between the two countries. Following their meeting, an announcement was made regarding the establishment of the Saudi-Moroccan investment office. The Rabat-based office will be opened by the end of this year.

Participants of the meeting agreed to organize an exhibition of Saudi and Moroccan products in Casablanca next December.

The Saudi and Moroccan Foreign Ministers and their accompanying delegations were briefed on a replica for a real estate and tourism project, which is due to be implemented in Al-Jadidah, in western Morocco.

The Joint Committee meeting will end later today.
