28Jul2003 Expansion projects near Makkah Grand Mosque

Makkah, 28th July 2003

Three major projects to develop Makkah have been finalized.

Crown Prince Abdullah Bin Abdul Aziz, Deputy Premier and Commander of the National Guard, approved the Western Gate Road Project last week, according to a report published today by Saudi Gazette. Jabal Omar, an underground tunnel passing through Jabal Omar, will be developed to reach the third project known as Western Gate Road.

Dr Osama Fadhl Al-Bar, Dean of Umm Al-Qura University and Head of THE Hajj Research Centre in Makkah, said that the Jabal Omar project would employ approximately 25,000 workers.

Two five-star hotels, with 935 rooms; three four-star hotels, with 1,210 rooms, and six three-star hotels, with 1,255 rooms, will be built on a covered area of 244,800 square metres. A number of 20-storey residential buildings will be constructed to accommodate 100,000 people, including a car-parking facility for over 10,000 vehicles.

The project also comprises 520 restaurants, roads, open areas, gardens, fire-brigade stations, police stations, schools, medical centres and public toilets for men and women. Arrangements have been made to provide covered, air-conditioned plazas for 100,000 worshippers and open courtyards for 120,000 offering prayers.

The total area covered by the project is 1,201,090 square meters, 833,590 square meters of which is above the ground, and 367,500 square meters underground. “The entire project has been designed very scientifically, giving health and sanitation a very special consideration. The Makkah Construction and Development (MC and D) Company has begun working on the project,” Al-Bar added.
