Prince Talal bin Abdul Aziz, President of the Arab Gulf Program for the United Nations Development Organizations, who is also the special envoy of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) for water, announced the establishment of the Water Fund to support UNESCO’s projects in the field. He also announced the Program’s contribution of $1 million to the Fund.
In a speech delivered today at the International Water Conference, which is currently in progress in Delft, the Netherlands, Prince Talal called for the establishment of Water Councils in developing countries to provide data to the international community for assessment of water resources, and to project and implement water policies and strategies.
Prince Talal called for conservation of water, and enhanced efforts to educate citizens of Arab countries, particularly the Gulf region, in this regard. He reiterated the need for domestic migration in order to overcome the problems associated with water scarcity in various regions.
