Riyadh, 14th July 2003

The Ministry of Health today announced that cases of Cutaneous Myiasis disease reported in Jazan and Hail regions have been contained and treated.

In a statement, the Ministry said that the disease is caused by blue flies contaminating water supplies, and that the 90 cases in Al-Farhaniyyah village in Hail region were the result of such water contamination.

The Ministry added that the Health Affairs Directorate in Jazan Region formed a Committee which recommended that citizens report to health centres to seek information on the disease, and that the concerned authorities used increased levels of pesticides and hasten to remove disposed rubbish in order to decreased the chances of contamination by the flies.
