The Interior Ministry today issued a further statement regarding the raid by security forces against a terrorist group in an apartment in Al-Attas building of Al-Khalidiya neighbourhood in Makkah, stating that the security forces were acting on reliable, accurate intelligence when they besieged the building.
The security forces demanded that the terrorists, who were poised to commit a terrorist attack, surrender themselves and their weapons. But the group began shooting at security officials and passers by, which forced the security unit to respond promptly and firmly. The exchange of fire resulted in the capture of a number of terrorists of different nationalities. The injured were rushed to hospital for treatment.
The security forces burst into the apartment, and found it wired and prepared for detonation. They found the following: 72 hand-made pipe bombs; a number of booby-trapped copies of the holy Quran; 12 machine guns with 50 magazines; six pistols and a large quantity of live ammunition; eleven acid bottles; 40 cleavers; 23 torches; a number of booby-trapped thermoses; a set of telecommunication devices, and chemicals (Aluminum Nitrates) with sawdust and white powder.
During the raid, the following 12 persons were arrested: Ahmed Abdulrahman Isa Haroon, a Chadian national; Ahmed Khalid Mohammed Al-Husan, Saudi; Khalid Ali Tahir Mohammed Ali, Chadian; Musaed Ahmed Abdulrahman Al-Khuraisi, Saudi; Basheir Mohammed Haroon, Chadian; Amin Mohammed Abdullah Al Aqala Al-Ghamdi, Saudi; Isam Khalaf Mohammed Al-Ghamdi, Saudi; Rasheed Abdullah Rasheed Al-Khathlan, Saudi; Majid Ibrahim Al-Mighaineem, Saudi; Amir Abdulhameed Saud Al-Saedi, Saudi; Mohammed Fathi Abdulati Al-Sayyed, Egyptian; Ibrahim, code-named Abuthar, of unknown nationality.
Five militants were killed during the raid. Two of the men were identified as Ibrahim Abdulwahab Al-Nafeesa, code-named Abu Al-Khabbab, a Saudi, and Abdulhameed Trawoori, code-named Abduabdullah Al-Makki, of Malian nationality. Investigations also revealed that two of the other bodies belonged to code-named Adnan and Khalid. Efforts are currently underway to identify the fifth body.
The source concluded that any act designed to destabilize the security of the nation would be dealt with immediately and definitively, and that such criminal plots would be foiled with the grace of God Almighty and the vigilance of security officials, citizens and residents.
