15Jun2003 Raid in Makkah captures terrorists

Riyadh, 15th June 2003

At 9:30 on Saturday evening, security officials raided ‘Al-Attas’ apartment building in Al-Khalidia district in Makkah, where a group of terrorists were preparing to launch a terrorist attack, an official source at the Interior Ministry told the Saudi Press Agency (SPA).

During the raid, the terrorists fired heavily on the security officials, and citizens around the building, to which the officials responded by firing at the terrorists, the source said.

Five of the terrorists were killed, and investigations are underway to identify them. Five other terrorists were captured, two of whom were from Chad, one was from Egypt, one from Saudi Arabia, and the fifth is yet to be identified.

Captain Yassir bin Hasabullah Al-Mulad and Soldier Fahd bin Abdullah Wazna were martyred, and five policemen and four citizens sustained injuries.

The source said that the terrorists had rigged the apartment for explosion, and that security officials found 72 bombs of various sizes that had been prepared by the terrorists, a number of submachine guns, other guns, live ammunition, cleavers, contact-devices, chemical materials for making explosives and head-masks.

The source said that there would be a further statement announcing details in this regard.
