12Jun2003 Progress for team of Saudi lawyers on Guantanamo detainees

Riyadh, 12 June, 2003

The three-member team of Saudi lawyers tasked with settlement of the issue of Saudi detainees in Guantanamo has expressed its satisfaction at the good news reported by news agencies and Saudi daily papers on Saudi detainees in Guantanamo, saying that Britain had demanded that the United States end the irregular situation of prisoners detained there.

Earlier the British Foreign Office Minister Mike O'Brien said at the House of Commons, " We informed the Americans that they should implement international rules on the detention of such prisoners''.

During the recent visit of the team to Britain, the Saudi lawyers had pursued this approach through attendance at part of the meetings of the House of Commons and meeting with some members who expressed their sympathy for the detainees in Guantanamo.

On this occasion the team thanked the British Government and the House of Commons for this stand.
