10Jun2003 Fibre-optic cable system links Saudi Arabia and Sudan

Jeddah, 10th June 2003

The Submarine Cable Link between Saudi Arabia and Sudan, which will strengthen the telecommunications network in the region, was formally launched on Monday, in the presence of senior officials of the two countries.

Khalid Bin Abdullah Al-Milhim, President of Saudi Telecom Company (STC), and Abdul-Aziz Othman, Director General of Sudan Telecom Company, said that the new facility would provide a better communications network in the region.

The SAS-1 Submarine Cable Link between Jeddah and Port-Sudan in Sudan is a point-to-point, 333km-long, 4-fibre pair cable system, with a capacity of 1.28 Tbits/s.

Saudi Gazette today quoted the STC President announcing a plan to build a new high-capacity cable between Singapore, India, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Italy. In addition to linking Saudi Arabia and Sudan, the cable connection will also connect Sudan by STC network to the UAE, Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, Yemen and Jordan. The project will provide high capacities for the transmission and exchange of information.

Ahmed Al-Tejani, Consul General of Sudan in Jeddah, said that bilateral relations between Saudi Arabia and Sudan, will be further enhanced with the functioning of the cable link, as will investments, commerce and the economies of the two countries. He said that Sudan Telecom would connect this cable link to the communications networks of Egypt, Chad and Ethiopia.
