Madinah, 6th June 2003

The Secretary General of Al-Madinah District Council, Muhammed Mustafa Saif, said that a train service linking Al-Madinah, Yanbu, Jeddah and Makkah would commence in approximately 23 months.

Muhammed Mustafa Saif said: “The meeting between the Governor of Al-Madinah Region and the President of the General Authority for Railways resulted in a proposal for implementation of the railway project,” Al-Iqtisadiyah newspaper reported.

A working group, comprising representatives of concerned parties, was previously established to carry out the plan, which will cost approximately SR6 billion.

Decision No. 3/33 taken by the Supreme Economic Council stipulates that a network of railroads should be constructed, and a committee set up to supervise the project under chairmanship of the President of the General Authority for Railways.
